DIY: Stencilled corkboards

One of my FAV refashioning projects is stencilling corkboards. It’s easy and totally jazzes up a boring ole corkboard. And I never buy corkboards since there is always one to be found at your local thrift store. I love cutting them up, framing them in thrift store frames and now stencilling them.

For this DIY, I’m reloving two secondhand finds – a wood panel and some cork tiles. It’s a double whammy.

Supplies:

  • cardboard
  • wood panel (optional)
  • Mod Podge (optional)
  • stencil
  • sponge brush
  • craft paint
  • masking tape

First step is finding the wood panel and cork tile. Feel free to modify this project by skipping the wood panel and sourcing a framed corkboard.

For those that are using a wood panel for the base of the cork, you first cover the wood panel in Mod Podge.

Next add the cork tile to the panel. Rub the surface of the cork tile to smooth it out and allow to dry. Feel free to place a heavy book on top while the Mod Podge dries.

Note: for this DIY, I ended up buying a smaller wood panel to create a pair of funky corkboards.

Once the glue is dry, you’re ready to stencil. Use masking tape to adhere the stencil to your cork.

You can find stencils at your local dollar store or craft store. This is a Martha Stewart stencil from Michaels.

Pour some craft paint onto a plastic lid then dab the top of your sponge brush in the paint. Don’t use a lot of paint or it will seep under the stencil. Now you can dab the cork surface along the edges of the stencil.

Allow to dry before you remove the stencil. And that’s it!

Here’s my finished pair of corkboard awesomeness. For your design, you can use words, patterns or anything else you fancy to dress up your corkboards. These are perfect for your office or kitchen and they look FAB.
