DIY: Mason jar packaging

Reusable packaging is all the rage these days! Especially using Mason jars – they’re an upcyclers go to item. And luckily you can always score one or more at your local thrift store for cheap. This is a budget minded, simple and swanky DIY. Gotta love it!

Supplies:

  • a Mason jar
  • craft paint
  • sponge brush
  • sandpaper
  • Mod Podge or Varathane to seal the paint
  • scrap paper

Find a suitable Mason jar and clean it. Make sure you get one with a lid. If not you can always buy lids or make your own.

Add 2-3 coats of craft paint to your Mason jar allowing to dry between coats.

Once the paint is dry use sandpaper to shabby chic the finish.

Brush the surface of the Mason jar to remove paint dust then add 1-2 coats of Mod Podge or Varathane to seal the paint.

Now that the Mason jar is done, you can now dress up the lid. Trace the removable lid on scrap paper.

Cut out the circle and glue the paper to the lid then insert it into the rim.

And you’re done! You can create your own matching gift tag if you want. I glued matching scrap paper to the inked side of a cardboard cereal box then traced a gift tag pattern and cut it out. Punch a hole in the gift tag then use ribbon or jute to hang the tag. Added bonus – the painted Mason jar can be used later as a vase or to store mementos. All in this project cost a few dollars.
